The NOAA Thermal Springs List gives a source temperature of 120°F (49°C) for the unnamed entry at this location. The land is managed by Bureau of Land Management, Bishop Field Office (Central California District), with Mono County Public Works on the access road. The usual route is 0.25 mi one way from Parking lot at the end of the Wild Willy's Hot Spring access road. Fee: none listed by BLM.
Wild Willy's Hot Springs, also known as Crowley Hot Springs, lies on open sagebrush flats in Long Valley, east of Mammoth Lakes in Mono County, California. The springs are on public land managed by the Bureau of Land Management's Bishop Field Office, which notes that several natural hot springs sit on BLM land in Long Valley. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, Long Valley is a volcanic caldera about 20 by 10 miles across that formed roughly 760,000 years ago in the eruption of the Bishop Tuff, and it remains thermally active, with many hot springs and fumaroles.
From U.S. Highway 395 near the Mammoth Yosemite Airport, Benton Crossing Road runs east across the valley. A dirt access road leaves Benton Crossing Road and ends at a parking lot, and a wooden boardwalk and path lead from the lot to the springs. In August 2022 the BLM and Mono County Public Works moved the entrance of the access road about 400 feet southwest to give drivers more sight distance on Benton Crossing Road. The BLM lists no fee. Dispersed camping on BLM land in the Bishop Field Office is limited to 14 days per year, while nearby land owned by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power allows camping only in designated campgrounds.
The access road carries heavy use. In 2018 the BLM reported more than 500 vehicles on the dirt road on busy days, when it worked with Mono County to resurface the road and improve drainage to protect sagebrush and meadow habitat. Mammoth Lakes is the nearest town with services. Shepherd Hot Springs and Crab Cooker Hot Springs lie a short distance to the west, off Whitmore Tubs Road.
