The land is managed by Big Bend National Park, Hot Springs Historic District (National Park Service). The hot spring in Big Bend National Park sits on the bank of the Rio Grande inside the park's Hot Springs Historic District, upriver from Rio Grande Village in Brewster County, Texas. The National Park Service manages the site and lists the water at 105 degrees Fahrenheit. The spring rises within the stone walls of J.O. Langford's old resort building, and the Park Service notes that it is subject to flooding at higher river levels. Pictographs left by people who lived here thousands of years ago mark the limestone cliffs along the trail.
The Hot Springs Historic Trail begins at a dirt parking lot about 2 miles down the Hot Springs dirt road. The Park Service lists a 1-mile loop with 200 feet of elevation change, or 0.5 mile round trip to the spring and back. Vehicles with low clearance, trailers and RVs must use an upper dirt lot, which adds about 1 mile round trip. As of October 2026, a weather-related park alert closed Hot Springs Road beyond the overflow parking area until further notice. Pets are not allowed on any park trails. The park entrance fee is $30 per private vehicle, valid for 7 days.
J.O. Langford came to the area in 1909, filed a homestead claim on the spring, and opened it to the public at 10 cents a day or $2 for a 21-day stay, according to the Park Service. The old store and post office building and a motor court that housed overnight guests still stand along the trail. Rio Grande Village, with campgrounds and a visitor center, is the nearest developed area, and the Boquillas Port of Entry to Mexico is a short drive east.
